Yogyakarta, Voicejogja.com The wellness tourism industry in Indonesia currently stands at a crossroads, caught between mirroring global trends and forging its own unique identity. Addressing this challenge, the Tourism Student Association of STP AMPTA Yogyakarta hosted a sharing session titled “Developing Cultural Wellness Tourism as a Premier Travel Product for DIY” on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Held in the Tamansari Room, the event featured GKR Bendara, a pivotal figure behind Jogja Cultural Wellness, as the keynote speaker.

Breaking Free from Foreign Dominance

During the engaging discussion, GKR Bendara highlighted a poignant reality: despite Indonesia’s abundance of traditional health practices, the current wellness industry remains heavily reliant on foreign entities. This is evident in the dominance of international instructors and certification bodies, particularly in the realms of yoga and breathwork, where indigenous Indonesian facilitators remain a rarity.

“We are still trailing behind global trends because we lack a robust and independent local certification infrastructure,” GKR Bendara remarked.

She emphasized that Indonesia must immediately establish local certification bodies to produce instructors who are internationally recognized yet remain anchored in the spirit and distinctive approach of the Archipelago.

The Power of Narrative: Selling Meaning, Not Just Services

Beyond mere infrastructure, GKR Bendara asserted that the cornerstone of successful wellness tourism lies in the strength of storytelling and cultural narrative. Indonesia possesses the immense potential to “re-write” global fitness concepts by integrating elements of local wisdom that are unique to this nation.

According to her, every region (from Bali and Yogyakarta to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT))possesses distinct cultural roots that should serve as a unique identity in their service delivery. With a compelling narrative, international tourists will come not only for physical rejuvenation but also to immerse themselves in the philosophical values and history behind every health practice they experience.

Understanding the Traveler: From Beginners to Digital Detox

The session also dissected the increasingly diverse market segmentation. GKR Bendara explained that there are two primary archetypes of wellness travelers:

  • The Beginner: Those who enjoy light activities, such as riverside yoga or meditation, as a small component of their vacation.

  • The Expert: Travelers seeking intensive retreats, such as five-day “Digital Detox” packages without mobile devices, which combine meditation, holistic nutrition, and sound healing.

Successful examples like Yoga Barn in Bali serve as a benchmark for how travel packages can be professionally curated while maintaining the authenticity of the experience offered.

Collaboration Towards Sustainability

In closing, GKR Bendara called for the vital importance of cross-sector collaboration between the government, academia, and industry practitioners to build a sustainable ecosystem. The standardization of products and services is not merely a matter of bureaucracy; rather, it is a guarantee of safety and comfort for global travelers.

Through innovation rooted in culture, it is hoped that Indonesia’s thematic tourism products will not only compete on the world stage but also become a legacy that continues to breathe life into the nation’s noble traditions for generations to come.(Oi)
